The Resilience of Christoph Kramer: Overcoming Injury Setbacks and Embracing Gladbach’s Playing Style

During preparation, Christoph Kramer (32) tore an inner ligament in his knee and was out for weeks.

The 2014 world champion made his brief comeback in the Bundesliga in the 1-0 defeat against Leipzig – he was substituted on by Gladbach coach Gerardo Seoane (44) after 79 minutes.

Kramer’s conclusion after the unfortunate defeat: “We showed what we set out to do – and what our football will and must look like this season. We have to play a lot of man-to-man, press a lot high, make long routes. This year, because we don’t have enough player material, it won’t be about finding incredibly good solutions in terms of football. In the first few minutes of a Bundesliga game it will always be a battle of attrition, we have to accept that, play a lot of long balls, play with our weapons. That always has to be found a little bit, but that was a very good step in the direction of what our football should look like this season.”

Nevertheless, in the end there was another home defeat – like against Leverkusen (0:3) and Bayern (1:2). Why is it just not working against the top teams this season?

Kramer: “You just need luck against these teams. Last year we beat them all at home. But if you look at the games, we allowed more chances against Bayern and Leipzig, but we scored the goals up front. In the end, only the result is evaluated. I didn’t think we played a good game against Bayern this season. Now against Leipzig I found that. We have to build on that. We can all read the table.”

“The fans give us strength and power!”

Despite only two points from the five games so far, there was once again a lot of applause and encouragement from the fans after the game!

Plain text Kramer: “The fans understood it, that’s very important in situations like this. Many large, traditional clubs in the past have stumbled because they didn’t have this cohesion. During periods of upheaval, the last thing a team needs is for the ranks to become restless. The Gladbach audience is a sensitive and good audience, I’ve always said that and they’re showing that particularly this season. It’s unbelievably fun and I think I can speak for the whole team when we go into the curve after games like this. It’s not that we take it for granted – it really gives us strength and power. And that’s very cool.”
