The Painful Defeat: Dutch Women’s National Team Loses to Belgium in Nations League Opener

The women of the Dutch national team suffered a painful defeat in and against Belgium in the first match in the Nations League tournament. Due to a blunder by the debuting goalkeeper, Andries Jonker’s team lost 2-1.

Through the Nations League, Jonker and his team hope to qualify for the Olympic Games that will be held in Paris in the summer of 2024. In Leuven, the national coach had to make do without two of his goalkeepers. First choice Daphne van Domselaar and her intended replacement Lize Kop were not fit enough. It paved the way for the debut of Feyenoord keeper Weimar.

In the first half, Jonker’s team had several chances to take a lead, but they were wasted by Lieke Martens and Lineth Beerensteyn, among others. Only after half time did the Dutch team take the lead: Jill Roord scored after putting Beerensteyn back, making it 0-1. However, that lead would not last long: the first counter-attack brought the Belgians level.

The Dutch team then seemed to be looking for the liberating 1-2, but deep into injury time the team was defeated. In the second minute of injury time, Weimar completely missed a Belgian corner kick, after which Jassina Blom headed in the 2-1.
