The action of the Spirit, who blows where he wants, with the apostolate of a generous handful of lay people is at the root of the holy Church of God on Korean land.

The first germ of the Catholic faith, brought by a lay Korean in 1784 upon his return to his homeland from Beijing, was fertilized in the mid-19th century by the martyrdom which saw 103 members of the young community associated with it. Among them are Andrea Kim Taegon, the first Korean priest and the lay apostle Paolo Chong Hasang. The persecutions that raged in successive waves from 1839 to 1867, rather than suffocating the faith of the neophytes, aroused a springtime of the Spirit in the image of the nascent Church.

The apostolic imprint of this Far Eastern community was rendered, with simple and effective language, inspired by the parable of the good sower, by the presbyter Andrew on the eve of his martyrdom. During his pastoral trip to that distant land, Pope John Paul II, on May 6, 1984, included the Korean martyrs in the calendar of saints. Their memory is celebrated today, because a group of them suffered martyrdom in this month, some on 20 and 21 September.
