The Italian ambassador to Spain, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, has written a letter complaining that a Spanish basketball team is sponsored by a company that presents to the mafia name as claim. “The news of the collaboration between an important Spanish basketball team and this chain has disturbed me,” the diplomat wrote in his letter, addressed to the Casademont Zaragoza team and in which he criticized the restaurant chain The Mafia sits at the Table.
“Associating the Mafia with concepts of cordiality and relaxation, based on the fact that the Mafia is I would sit at the table to share a meal, contributes to the trivialization of illegal activities and misdeeds committed by said organization, which go against the fundamental values of the European Union”, argued the ambassador in his letter, published this Monday by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

In addition, “the image of the Mafia that sits at the table goes to the detriment of the culture of the diet mediterranean, shared by Spain and Italy, which makes food an important moment of social exchange and personal growth”, he continued. “Many efforts and considerable resources are dedicated to the fight against it (the mafia), not only by the Italian government, but also at the EU level, organized crime being a serious security threatthe legal economy and coexistence”, he added, also recalling the many Italians who “live and work” in Spain.
Along these lines, the Italian representative has also recalled a ruling by the General Court of the European Union that stated that the name of these restaurants is “contrary to public order and offensive, not only for the victims of this criminal organization and their family, but also for anyone.” In 2022, the Coldiretti agricultural association denounced the existence of at least 300 restaurants in the world that use names and symbols of Italian mafia organizations.
