The Investigation into Schild & Friends: Memes, Weapons, and Legal Consequences

The research into Schild & Friends started in the autumn of 2018, when the VRT NWS research program “Pano” produced a report on the movement. It showed how hundreds of memes (internet cartoons) circulated behind the scenes, which may have been racist, sexist and negationist. An investigation into the prohibited carrying of weapons was also started against Dries Van Langenhove, the leader of the movement, because he was in possession of pepper spray. Ultimately, in addition to Van Langenhove, six more members will have to answer to court. Five others received a suspension of judgment. This means that the council chamber assumes that they are guilty of the facts, but that it is better not to bring them to trial, so as not to hinder their reintegration.
