The Inaccuracies of ChatGpt: Challenges in Reliability of Information on the Giostra del Saracino

by Matteo Marzotti

“The Giostra del Saracino is an archery competition on horseback”. It is a complete rejection that belongs to ChatGpt on the theme Carousel given the answers provided to the questions on the theme. The chatbot, or artificial intelligence at the center of long debates regarding privacy, has increasingly taken the field in recent months among very young people and beyond. Once connected to the (free) platform, users can ask questions via chat to the artificial intelligence which answers in a few seconds on several areas, including the Giostra del Saracino, but the reliability of the information leaves much to be desired.

An example? Just ask what are the colors of Porta del Foro and here is a few lines as an answer in which it is explained how the “colors associated with the Porta del Foro district are green and red” which in reality would be of Porta Crucifera, which however according to ChatGpt are instead the “white and green”. Yes, because the rivals of Sant’Andrea for artificial intelligence wear “yellow and blue” clothes.

It does not improve the situation even by asking for the colors of Porta Santo Spirito which according to the chatbot would be “white and blue”. Among other things, there are also some inaccuracies on the origins of the neighborhoods. For example Sant’Andrea, due to artificial intelligence, would take its name from a church near the headquarters in via delle Gagliarde without therefore mentioning the link with the saint Andrea Guasconi.

It doesn’t go better when it comes to explaining the rules of the Giostra since we are talking about knights on horseback, but the score takes into account the force imprinted on the tumbler, as well as the precision, without forgetting the fact that we are talking about artificial intelligence in any case of a competition where the use of the bow is also foreseen.

Another serious mistake returning to flea the answers of the chat is the one on the dates and dedications of the two editions of the event. “The Giostra del Saracino is traditionally held twice a year, usually during the month of June (Giostra di San Donato)”, and so far so good except that the September joust is dedicated arbitrarily – that is precisely the case to say it “to San Michele” and not to the Madonna del Conforto like the one that will take place in a few hours in Piazza Grande. Blue pencil mistakes and immediate rejection.
