Team – Ex-Bayern defender Holger Badstuber criticizes choice of Julian Nagelsmann: “Even Magath is more interesting”

Holger Badstuber has criticized the DFB’s decision to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as the new national coach. The former Bayern defender would have preferred to see one of his former coaches on the sidelines of the German national team instead.

“I would have liked to have seen it if it had been my former coach and sponsor Louis van Gaal. I even found the thought game with Felix Magath more interesting than the decision for Nagelsmann. Well, it’s a shame,” wrote Badstuber in his column on web.de .

However, he doesn’t necessarily think Nagelsmann is the right choice. “Is he what the DFB needs at the moment? Probably not. Nagelsmann is not a coach for a project like the home European Championships. He is a club coach who wants and has to work with a team every day. That is where his future lies,” led the 34-year-old continues.

At the same time, Badstuber emphasized that he was completely convinced of Nagelsmann’s qualities. “I don’t deny Nagelsmann’s competence. Anyone who made it to FC Bayern and to the sidelines of the German national team at such a young age deserves nothing but respect. He is an extraordinary character, a tactician, rhetorically strong, simple a very good coach.”

DFB team: Nagelsmann with a contract until 2024

Nagelsmann was introduced as the new national coach yesterday, Friday. The 36-year-old was given a contract with the DFB until the end of the domestic European Championship in 2024.

Before his appointment, Van Gaal, another ex-Bayern coach, was circulating in the newspapers as a possible candidate. Magath brought himself into the conversation in an interview with the radio station NDR 90.3.
