Swiss national soccer coach Murat Yakin heavily criticized FC Bayern’s handling of goalkeeper Yann Sommer last season.

The goalkeeper, who now plays for Inter Milan in Italy, was “pulled through a slingshot” in Munich, Yakin said in an interview with Sport1.

The former Bundesliga professional from VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Kaiserslautern complained that Sommer had not been trusted enough by the German record champions. “He became a victim of a mechanism that only happens at Bayern,” said the Swiss coach.

“He showed what he can do”

Sommer came to Bayern from Borussia Mönchengladbach during the 2022/23 winter break because goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was injured. With the Swiss between the posts, Munich won the championship, but failed in the quarter-finals in the Champions League at eventual champions Manchester City. Bayern were also eliminated early in the DFB Cup – goalkeeper Sommer was repeatedly criticized.

“All the criticism gnawed at him. I didn’t understand it,” said Yakin. “You knew Yann and knew who to get. He showed what he could do. And he never complained. It wasn’t easy for Yann at Bayern, so he struggled with that.”
