Spetialis: La Spezia Antica Festival – A Journey into the Past

Duels, parades, music, shows, dances, crafts, guided tours and workshops for adults and children. In a word, ‘Spetialis’ is the La Spezia Antica festival, the first major historical re-enactment event from the Middle Ages to the 19th century in La Spezia organized by the Municipality’s cultural services, scheduled for Friday 29th and Saturday 30th September, and Sunday 1st October. Spetialis, and the reference to one of the variants of the ancient name of La Spezia is clear, is a project curated by Donatella Alessi and Giacomo Paolicchi.

“A rich program – declares the mayor Pierluigi Peracchini – dedicated to a heterogeneous audience, with entertainment opportunities which, at the same time, will allow us to delve deeper into and discover our past, because we believe it is essential to look to the future starting from full knowledge of our cultural roots” . With over thirty events, ‘Spetialis’ is a celebration of the city and for the city, thanks to which we will rediscover the oldest city origins, historical corners, ways of living of the past and will reveal some of the treasures preserved in the museums , in libraries and churches in La Spezia. The inauguration of Spetialis will be held on Friday 29 September, from 6pm to 8pm, in the streets of the city center with a historical procession in costume and shows. The program of the second day, Saturday 30 September, includes guided tours in the morning by reservation to the church of Santa Maria and the Lia Museum (with Andrea Marmori). In the afternoon at the Ethnographic Museum you will be able to learn about and experiment with traditional crafts, kneading and stamping croxetti, learning popular dances and admiring our traditional costumes. On the morning of Sunday 1 October there will be guided tours by reservation to the antiphonaries of the Lia Museum (again with Marmori), a tour of the city to the Church of the Madonna della Neve and the Mazzini library (with Giacomo Bertonati). In the afternoon the San Giorgio Castle will come alive with a medieval re-enactment in which you can visit a military camp and experience life at the time with workshops for children and adults, demonstrations of craft activities and archery tests. In the evening there will be the opportunity to savor dishes inspired by medieval cuisine on the terrace of Castello San Giorgio, as at a banquet, followed by shows, dances, music and fights which will conclude this journey into the past. The activities in the Castle and Ethnographic Museums require the payment of an entrance ticket, while the guided visits on Saturday and Sunday to the Lia Museum and the Mazzini Library are free with reservations required at the contacts of the two structures. In case of adverse weather conditions the procession will not take place, while the events in the museums will have a reduced programme.
