Athletes from both countries were banned from international tournaments following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which Moscow calls a “military operation”.

“The World Aquatics Bureau recognizes the dedication, commitment and talent of athletes, regardless of their nationality,” said FINA President Hussain Al Musallam.

“Despite the challenges we face in the international arena, we recognize our responsibility to promote a competitive, fair and inclusive environment for every competitor,” he added.

The criteria for the participation of Russian and Belarusian competitors were determined by a special working group, which was established by the sports body in April, following the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee.

“abc.net” also reports the news, adding to what was said earlier that the commission was created with the purpose of checking athletes, coaches and officials to make sure they did not show any support for the war. Social media posts, for example, will be checked to see if athletes have taken part in pro-war demonstrations since the invasion began.
