The freedom of movement in the Jumbo-Visma leaves a panorama of changes, with 8 seconds between the still leader Sepp Kuss and Vingegaard
The ‘red’ continues to belong to Kuss thanks to Mikel Landa (fourth) who was looking for the stage victory

The Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) won this Wednesday the seventeenth stage of La Vuelta 23, held between Ribadesella and Alto de L’Angliru over 124.4 kilometers, in an exhibition by the Dutch team when Jonas Vingegaard arrived on the wheel of the Slovenian and with Sepp Kuss, leader, third to resist and safeguard the red with just 8 seconds of margin over the winner of the Tour.
The dominance of Jumbo-Visma continues and with total spectacle to break some of the various predictions that could be made. L’Angliru, tougher and more magical if possible with the fog that welcomed the cyclists to its summit, saw how Roglic won his second stage in this Vuelta and almost caused Vingegaard, who got stuck in the wheel, to snatch him from Kuss the leader’s jersey.
But the American, who was left without a gift in the form of a stage on the day of his 29th anniversary, barely had a bad and brief moment 2 kilometers from the finish line, when he said ‘go guys’ to the Slovenian and the Dane when he was left without forces. But he recovered quickly and saved the day, entering the finish line 19 seconds behind and, after the bonuses, continuing to lead with those 8 seconds over Vingegaard and 1:08 over Primoz Roglic, third overall.
Everything is still open despite the closed fog in L’Angliru. And with freedom of movement so that the strongest wins in the Jumbo-Visma, without jeopardizing a podium place for the team. So the 8 seconds of margin gives rise to more ‘dances’ between them. If the forces are equal, there should be no direct attacks or ‘from behind’. But if someone falters, the rest can go all out.
This scenario leaves a climb to L’Angliru which, as always, was spectacular. On its hard ramps, in the famous Cueña Les Cabres with a 24 percent gradient, this Vuelta may have changed. For now, it leaves Jumbo-Visma with more doubts, with its three leaders being stage winners and with only 1:08 between them. And on its ramps we also saw Mikel Landa reborn and Enric Mas and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) suffer.
The good level of Bahrain-Victorious was surprising to be close to the ambition and great legs of Mikel Landa. The Basque was the only one who approached the Jumbo-Visma and, in fact, he pulled the leader Sepp Kuss and encouraged, without being his war, that he continue in red. Landa’s goal, the stage, escaped him by just 19 seconds but his great ascent helped him win fourth place overall from Enric Mas.
The one from Artà (Mallorca) arrived 1:43 behind Roglic at the finish line, tenth behind Juan Ayuso (1:42) who also did not have his best day on his first professional climb to L’Angliru. Not even the occasional help from his classmate Joao Almeida, sixth, was of any use to him and he was unable to follow his wheel. Even so, Ayuso remains fourth overall, 4 minutes behind Kuss, with 16 seconds over Landa, fifth, and 30 over Mas, sixth.
Outside of the fight for the general classification, this stage saw the most combative version of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step). The Belgian champion, more than 37 minutes away in the fight for the red jersey, continues to show his quality and went, escaping with a teammate, for points for the mountain jersey that he is wearing. But he ran out of strength, when he was leading, 5.6 kilometers from the top.
Also surprising was the tactics of the Catalan Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), who attacked in Alto de la Colladiella to go after Evenepoel. He did not achieve it despite his exhibition, followed in Alto del Cordal, and in the end he paid the consequences in L’Angliru. Swallowed 10 minutes from the finish line, he lost 18:45 minutes at the finish line and lost 7 places in the general classification, where he is now 13th, 21:56 behind Kuss.
