Roger Federer: A Tennis Star’s Commitment to Children and Philanthropy

Roger Federer is committed to children – and is a father of four himself. Now the tennis star has answered parenting questions and provided private insights.

UN Sustainability Summit in New York and none other than Roger Federer is making people sit up and take notice. The 20-time Grand Slam winner founded a foundation in 2004 to promote educational projects in southern Africa. “I believe in the strength and abilities of people. Sometimes all you need is a little help getting started,” is how he explains his commitment.

He is now speaking about this at the UN. He wants to support parents in shaping the future of their children through education. One of Federer’s specific demands: preschool education should become a reality for everyone worldwide. Equal opportunities, educational equality and support for disadvantaged children: that’s what drives the now 42-year-old.

A remarkable detail of this commitment: Roger Federer founded his foundation when he had no children of his own. He is now a father of four: 14-year-old Myla and Charlene and nine-year-old Leo and Lenny. Since becoming a father himself, early childhood development has been particularly important to him. According to him, fatherhood showed him how important the first years of life are – and he also becomes private.

“I want my children to get involved in philanthropy”

“It’s incredible how children develop in the first years of life, the first 1,000 days of their lives. They learn to walk, eat, talk, interact, behave socially, argue – even with me,” said Federer with a laugh. The experience with his children strengthens him in his work: “That inspires me to be here today.”

He also passes on his attitude to his children: “I want my children to get involved in philanthropy.” That’s why the twin pairs will accompany him on a foundation trip to Lesotho, in southern Africa, this year. “Nine and 14 is a good age to introduce them,” says Federer, who ended his active tennis career in tears last year – a peculiarity at the age of 41 at the time.

Since his retirement, he has really lived out his role as a father. “I take the kids to tennis, back and forth, to school, pick them up again,” he told the Wall Street Journal in a recent interview. All four of his children have a heart for tennis. “It took my two girls a while to warm up to playing tennis. But they’ve made progress. Now they’re enjoying it and are already playing for points.”
