Francisco Cerundolo (N.22) eliminated Alexander Zverev (N.5) in the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Madrid. At the same time Iga Swiatek (N.1) validates her ticket for the semi-finals.

World No.5 Alexander Zverev was stopped in the round of 16 at the Masters 1000 in Madrid by Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo (22nd), victorious 6-3, 6-4 in just under an hour and a half on Tuesday.

Two days earlier in the previous round, Zverev, twice titled on Madrid clay, had stayed up until 12:45 a.m. to complete his third round match (6-4, 7-5 against Shapovalov).

Cerundolo reached the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 for the fourth time in his career, at the age of 25, after Miami (twice) and Rome. He is the first Argentine player to reach the quarter-finals in the Spanish capital since Juan Martin del Potro in 2012.

In the women’s draw, world number one Iga Swiatek opposed Beatriz Haddad Maia had difficulty starting her match, even conceding the first set. Before recovering and sweeping the Brazilian in the last two sets 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
