The Red Dragons were unable to pull off a stunt in the 1/8th finals of the European Volleyball Championship. The Belgian volleyball played two excellent sets against Poland – one of which they won – but ultimately had to bow their heads against the number 1 in the world.

The Red Dragons no longer needed a description of how difficult their assignment was.

Getting through to the quarter-finals against top country Poland at the European Volleyball Championship seemed more than a utopia. The Belgians felt that somewhere, which explains their weak start to the match.

The Dragons wanted to fight against the number 1 in the world, but he seemed to have players with more than a few arms.

Reggers and Desmet pounded and fought, but every ball came back. Sam Deroo also had a hard time and crashed on an impressive block. That resulted in two quick sets and some pouting in the Belgian camp.

The Belgians would not be themselves if they never gave up hope.

Admittedly, at the beginning of the third set the journey towards a bone-dry 3-0 seemed to have started. But then things suddenly started to turn for the Belgians. First, Wout D’Heer offered a way out against the Polish block by increasing the tempo through the middle. Then Deroo and Desmet also entered the match.

Doubts suddenly arose in Poland. The top country piled up the mistakes – much to the dissatisfaction of the national coach – and actually gave up the third set. Faith bubbled up in Belgium.

That hope remained intact until the absolute end of set four. But then the opponent no longer showed a final. Based on experience, Poland finished it. Belgium leaves the European Championship with a set win and a light touch of pride.
