Transfer to the home straight
Marco Verratti, the longest-serving player in the PSG squad, has agreed on a contract with Al-Arabi SC – this is confirmed by “L’Équipe” and transfer experts Fabrizio Romano consistent. Accordingly, the 30-year-old midfielder is expected in Qatar in the next 24 hours to complete the medical check before the most expensive transfer in league history is completed. The transfer fee is said to be 45 million and can rise to up to 50 million euros thanks to bonuses.
Since the start of the season, Verratti has no longer been part of the Paris team despite a contract until 2026 and recently canceled international matches with the Italian national team in order to sort out his sporting future. Like some other players that PSG has sorted out, this is in the Arab region.
This summer, thanks to its good connections in the region, the club received 123 million euros in transfers for Neymar, Georginio Wijnaldum and ex-Dortmunder Abdou Diallo. At least 45 million euros will be added thanks to Verratti. Julian Draxler was also linked to Al-Arabi. The club brought in Rafinha from PSG in 2022, followed by Diallo in 2023, and now Verratti is on the way. As a result, the Parisians’ transfer income this summer will soon rise to 194 million euros – 168 of these million came from Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

According to a report by “The Athletic“Thomas Treß, finance director at BVB, not at all. At the general meeting of the European Club Association ECA in Berlin, Treß particularly criticized the transfer of Neymar for 90 million euros – with transfer fees well above the market value, PSG is undermining financial fair play. The Ligue 1 champions strengthened this summer for 349.5 million euros. PSG boss Nasser Al-Khelaïfi was said not to have been present during Treß’s statement; BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke reportedly later apologized to his Qatari colleague.
Qatar instead of Bayern or Chelsea: Verratti could have been PSG’s record player
While PSG still manages to generate important income with the sale of the 30-year-old Verratti, the Italian is probably the loser in this transfer poker. Certainly not financially, because in Paris he is said to have earned around 15 million euros gross per season, and he is likely to increase this amount in Qatar – but from a sporting perspective, the move to the Qatar Stars League is a big step down.
According to “L’Équipe”, FC Bayern, Chelsea and FC Barcelona, among others, tried to sign Verratti, but the Parisians did not like the offers. Al-Khelaïfi reportedly demanded a transfer fee of 100 million euros, which was too much for even Saudi clubs – after that it was said to have gone down to 70 million euros, but no club from Riyadh wanted to pay more than 45 million euros. The transfer window in Europe’s top leagues closed on September 1st and in Saudi Arabia on September 7th. That leaves Qatar, where the clubs can strengthen themselves until September 18th. Verratti is leaving Paris after 416 games – 21 games more and he would be the club’s record player.
