My name is Juei Misawa (maiden name: Takara) and I received the baton from senior Mizuho Matsuzaki.
I first met Mizuho-senpai at the German Junior International Tournament. After that, as a senior member of the Komatsu Women’s Judo Club, I not only learned judo, but I was also shown shopping around Shimokitazawa and other fashionable areas of Tokyo, and invited to dinner, where I learned many things.

I started judo at the end of the 6th grade of elementary school due to the influence of my younger sister (Mayumi Takara), who was featured on JJ Voice No. 10. My parents were self-employed and ran a butcher shop, so I didn’t have the opportunity to travel, so I found the idea of going to matches and expeditions outside the prefecture with kids my age very appealing, so I convinced my father that I wanted to try judo. Did. Until then, I had a tendency to not stick with my lessons and get bored easily, but I have been able to continue with judo to this day.

Looking back, I can only feel grateful that I was able to encounter the sport of judo once again. Thanks to judo, I was able to go to many different places, make many friends through judo, and share many experiences and memories. Throughout my life, I have been so immersed in judo that I can’t even imagine what my life would be like if I hadn’t done judo. And I am still able to continue to be involved in judo.

I believe that the reason I am able to approach Judo the way I am now is largely due to the influence of the dojo I entered. The Seizukan Judo Dojo, which happened to be near my house, was a dojo that naturally aimed to become the best in Japan. Even though I joined the club without knowing this, I thought it was only natural that I should strive for the weighty goal of becoming the best in Japan. There, even though the training was tough, I was able to have fun throwing and have a fulfilling time working toward my goals.

While I was in high school thinking about my future, I realized that I wanted to get a job that would allow me to be involved in judo forever. The reason is that I love judo and wanted to support and help people who are striving towards their goals.
Nowadays, there are various professions such as trainers and nutritionists, but at the time, all I could think of was coaching extracurricular activities.
In order to lead club activities, you have to become a school teacher. In order to do that, I needed to obtain a teaching license, so I entered Yokohama National University, which has the Faculty of Education.

I wasn’t able to get the results I wanted at university, but my teacher at Yokohama National University, Mr. Masahiko Kimura, introduced me to Mr. Matsuoka of the Komatsu Women’s Judo Club, and I attended a practice session. Even though she had no track record, she was chosen to join Komatsu Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
The eight years I spent as a player at Komatsu were truly fulfilling, and I learned and experienced so many things both as a member of society and as a player. Komatsu has branches all over the world, so it was always very reassuring to see many local people come to support us at international competitions. For the first time since I became a member of society, I was able to feel the gratitude of receiving support.
My life as an athlete was supposed to end at university, but thanks to the presence of Professor Matsuoka, Professor Nagai (now Nakamura), everyone involved at Komatsu, and my teammates, I was able to live a fulfilling life as an athlete. I was able to. I still think that the Komatsu Women’s Judo Club is the best club team in the world, including the company’s support system.

Currently, I am a health and physical education teacher and an advisor for the judo club at my alma mater, Miyazaki Nihon University High School.
Although it is often not easy to deal with students with various personalities, I am proud to be able to share time with students who are working single-mindedly towards their own goals and grow together. I think so.

I hope to continue to grow through judo by overlapping my own dreams with those of my students.

Sensei Matsuoka and his students celebrated his birthday after the All Japan Invitational Judo Weight Class Championships.

Next time, Mr. Yoshiyuki Matsuoka, Mr. Misawa’s mentor from his days in a corporate group (Komatsu), will appear.
