Pepe at the end, Turin beats Fortitudo

Reale Mutua Torino won the Memorial Pajetta, a friendly tournament hosted by APU Udine, beating Fortitudo Bologna 66-67 in the final. The Gialloblù team had to chase for almost all of the 40 minutes, then it was a triple from Pepe that decided the match.

Coach Ciani decides to leave with Vencato, Kennedy, De Vico, Thomas and Cusin. Coach Caja responds with Fantinelli, Aradori, Bolpin, Freeman and Ogden.

Reale Mutua gets off to a slow start, Fortitudo is more reactive and clear-headed in the start-up phase and gets up to 10-2. Thomas and De Vico hit from three to shorten, but on the other side Aradori and Ogden continued to find their way to the basket. Coach Ciani calls timeout on the Bolognese 19-9, but even when they return to the field the Gialloblù seem to have less fuel than Fortitudo, who extends further up to +14 which closes the first quarter: 27-13.

The pace of the match dropped in the second quarter, with the gap between the two teams remaining in the double digits against Turin (32-19 at mid-quarter). Effe runs in transition and extends to +15, De Vico tries to keep his hands in the game with two suspended baskets. Vencato scores from three off Kennedy’s discharge, allowing Torino to bring the gap back to single digits. We go to the locker room on 39-31.

Turin returns to the field with the right attitude to try and get back into the match. Thomas and Pepe sign the 7-0 run which is worth -1 at the start of the third quarter. Turin is in the game but Effe does not give up the advantage, even if it is now reduced compared to the one created in the first half of the match. Ghirlanda is confident and scores the triple of the new -2 on 47-45. Bologna relies on the talent of Aradori, Schina scores from three to close the third quarter on 53-48.

A bomb from De Vico opens the last quarter, while a layup on the counterattack from Thomas is worth a new -1, but Aradori and Panni respond by pushing the yellow-blues again two possessions down (60-55 with 5′ to go). Thomas scores from three but Bologna responds with an Ogden in the evening of grace. We enter the last two minutes with Turin down by four lengths. Thomas in penetration puts the -2 basket against the glass but Conti’s answer arrives for 66-62 with one minute to go. De Vico earns a trip to the line and makes 2/2, then it’s a triple from Pepe at the end that gives Reale Mutua the victory: the finale 66-67.
