The twins of pandas giants of Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, Youyou y Jiujiuturned two years old this Thursday and celebrated it with their favorite delicacy: a bamboo ice cream cake.
These famous pandas have received millions of visitors in the last two years and have even appeared on television in China.
For some local visitors to the zoo, pandas are very identifiable.
“You see that They have a very nice color together, and they are very good. And they are like me because they spend all day sleeping,” said a little panda fan.
Weighing only about 150 grams when they were born in 2021, these two males now weigh about 70 kilos each (almost equal to their mother Huazuiba) and will reach about 400 kilos when they are four years old.
Their diet is composed of 95 percent bamboo, plus carrots, apples, frozen ice and some dietary supplements.
It’s easy for her caregivers to tell them apart, and not just because Jiujiu has a smaller nose.

“The idea is that they will return to China, like other pandas, to enter the international breeding program. But it is possible that one or both will go to the Panda Valley for reintroduction,” said Maria del Clo, a panda keeper at the zoo.
These two little birthday boys may not know it, but they are symbols of something much bigger: the growing ties of friendship between China and Spain.
The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and Youyou and Jiujiu’s second birthday in good health is another cause for celebration.
