Novak Djokovic will probably take a longer break

Novak Djokovic doesn’t have much time to celebrate his 24th Grand Slam title. Because just a few days after his triumph at the US Open, the world number one will be back on the match court in Valencia. In the Spanish city, Serbia is aiming to qualify for the Davis Cup finals in Malaga (November 21st to 26th).

Captain Viktor Troicki’s selection got off to a successful start even without their superstar, as South Korea was defeated 3-0 on Tuesday. On Friday the Serbs will host Spain, and the next day they will face the Czech Republic. The good news for the probably somewhat exhausted Djokovic: There will be no duel with Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz after his cancellation.

While the world number two is already taking a break, Djokovic still has to wait a few days for his well-deserved vacation. But for good reason: As the 36-year-old announced in New York, winning the Davis Cup trophy is one of his last big goals of the current season.

Djokovic could even do without number one at the end of the year. In Flushing Meadows, his coach Goran Ivanisevic believed that his protégé would skip the tournaments in Asia and only return to the tour in the European indoor season. The organizers of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna will also have heard this statement.
