Novak Djokovic Leads Serbia to Davis Cup Quarterfinals in Impressive Comeback

Tennis star Novak Djokovic led Serbia to the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup just five days after his triumph at the US Open.

The 36-year-old defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6:3, 6:4 and gave the decisive 2-0 lead against Spain in Valencia. Laslo Djere had previously won 6:4, 6:4 against Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

For Djokovic it was the first appearance in the Davis Cup since losing the semi-final against Croatia in 2021. Last weekend he won the 24th Grand Slam title of his career in New York.

“I’m on cloud nine with everything that’s happened on the tennis court lately,” said Djokovic: “Playing for Serbia, for my country, is something completely different. It’s a big responsibility and a lot of pressure, but it is also a privilege and an honor.” The knockout phase will be played in Malaga in November.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray won an emotional victory for Great Britain. After the 6:7 (7:9), 6:4, 6:4 against Swiss Leandro Riedi in Manchester, Murray revealed that he had missed his grandmother’s funeral because of the game. “Today is a hard day for me, today is my grandma’s funeral. I’m sorry for my family that I can’t be there, but grandma, this is for you.”
