Negreira gave “slogans” to the referees before refereeing Barça in a bar in Barcelona run by his partner

The former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), José María Enríquez Negreira, gave “slogans” to the referees before refereeing Barça in a bar in Barcelona that his partner ran. The place was called “The Toast” and it was located at 209 San Antoni María Claret Street in the city of Barcelona.

The Court of Instruction No. 1 of Barcelona investigates, within the framework of the Negreira case, the payment by Barça of 7.3 million euros to the former vice president of the CTA, between 2001 and 2018. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Barcelona paid Negreira to carry out “actions tending to favor the FCB in the decision-making of the referees in the matches played by the Club, and thus in the results of the competitions”.

Arbitration sources who went to the “La Torrada” bar with Negreira consulted by Digital Freedom They remember that “he organized two types of meetings at the place his partner ran. Firstly, he met the day before the matches with the referees who were going to whistle at FC Barcelona and Espanyol to give them instructions and guidelines before the match. “Negreira also organized meetings with the referees of the Catalan Committee two or three times a year. In those meetings, he commented on his season grades, which he always kept in an accounting notebook that he carried with him.”

“At times, I would also talk to each referee about their notes in a hotel room. Negreira had a lot of power in the CTA and ran the day-to-day life of the members. I had access to all documents, reports and grades included. He controlled everything,” they add.

The same sources consulted by LD denounce that “First Division referees were forced to go to Negreira’s bar because he was the boss. The same thing happened with the coaching of Negreira’s son, Javier Enríquez, the referees were forced to hire his services and check out. “You had to go through the bar and be seen, it was very important.”

“’La Torrada’ was a very seedy and small neighborhood bar, which we ironically called the ‘Txistu of Barcelona’. As soon as you entered there was a bar to the left and at the back an interior patio with camping tables and chairs. During the week there was a menu, but when we went they gave us meat and sliced serrano ham from the supermarket, freshly taken out of the envelope, it was embarrassing. Then he charged us about 35 euros each, a lot of money for the quality of the food and the place,” they point out.

“Negreira’s partner was always behind the bar and had some other employees. When we went to “La Torrada” we had many conversations with Negreira related to football and refereeing in a very casual atmosphere.. Along with the vice president of the CTA, important directors of the Catalan Federation and other referee friends of his also attended the bar,” they conclude.

This ‘Negreira headquarters’ in Barcelona was open for approximately 4 or 5 years starting in 2009. Finally, the shutters came down and in its place an Asian tapas restaurant was opened, which continues today.

Negreira’s power in the CTA

The head of the Court of Instruction No. 1 of Barcelona, Joaquín Aguirre, denounced the existence of systemic corruption in the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA)The instructor made this assessment in a ruling two weeks ago in which he also confirmed the appearance of Real Madrid as injured in the case.

The instructor stated that “it is presumed by pure logic that FC Barcelona would not pay Vice President Negreira around 7 million euros since 2001 if it did not benefit him, but not because of the goodness of the reports in themselves, but because of the Negreira’s status as a member of the shortlist of vice presidents of the CTA, whose function was not simply representative, as Mr. Medina Cantalejo has indicatedcurrent president of the CTA, but also exercised functions of significant relevance in the qualification and appointment of arbitrators”.
