“All joking aside” – Rudi Völler says what is important when looking for a coach

Sports director and interim coach Rudi Völler comments on what will happen to the national team after the dismissal of coach Hansi Flick. The new team captain Ilkay Gündogan is also there. Watch the press conference in full length here in the video.

Hansi Flick is gone. At least according to his current plans, a trio around Rudi Völler will only take over today for the game against France. Damage limitation is the top priority against the World Cup runners-up. All information about the game can be found here in the ticker.

19 years after his resignation as team boss, Rudi Völler is back in a responsible position on the national team’s coaching bench this Tuesday (9 p.m. /, here in the ticker). The 63-year-old, together with Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner, will take over for the test match against runner-up world champions France in Dortmund after the German Football Association released Hansi Flick from his national coaching duties on Sunday. After the game it will be over for Völler and a longer-term successor solution will be found.

The separation from Flick did not come as a surprise after the 1:4 defeat against Japan in Wolfsburg on Saturday. An even more difficult task awaits the DFB selection against the French. The Équipe Tricolore of selection coach Didier Deschamps, world champions in 2018, have not lost so far this year and have world-class players in their ranks. The French won their last duel with Germany 1-0 at the start of the group phase at the 2021 European Championships in Munich.

French national coach Deschamps was “not surprised” by Flick’s exit shortly before the duel between the two national teams. The 54-year-old said he was sorry for Flick, whom he “respects very much”: “But we all know what happens when the results aren’t there.”
