The strike zone for robot referees (automatic judgment by a machine) has been changed. The Associated Press reported that the upper limit of the strike zone used in 3A this season has changed from August 29th (30th Japan time).

Until now this season, we have been looking at it two-dimensionally, with the ball being at the center of the front and back of home plate (8.5 inches from the front and back = behind the rectangular area), with an upper limit of 51% of the batter’s average height. . This was a small change from 56%. The lower limit was 27% of body height.

After the change, the image tracking system “Hawkeye” was used to take into account each batter’s stance and height, rather than the average. Specifically, the lower limit is the knee of the back leg, and the upper limit is 5.5 inches (about 14 centimeters) above the left and right buttocks. MLB predicts it will be one ball higher than Belt’s. The space is expected to be restored by about 0.5 inches (1.27 centimeters), which has become narrower since this year.

Automatic determination of the strike zone will probably be introduced in the major leagues sometime after next season. The current strike zone has an upper limit of “the midway point between the top of the shoulders and the top of the pants,” and a lower limit of “the top of the kneecap.” It’s ambiguous in a sense, but the umpires are making good adjustments, such as calling a “hittable ball” a “strike,” and calling a ball a one-bound ball.

Up until now, robot referees have been determined based on numbers between 27% and 51% of their height, but this will also change by reading in images of kneecaps and buttocks. By collecting data in 3A and modifying it by incorporating the opinions of the players, it becomes closer to human sensations.
