Max Verstappen cannot complain when it comes to money. The salary of the Dutch Formula 1 driver does not lie. That’s a good thing, because Verstappen and his F1 team Red Bull Racing have to pay a lot of money to be allowed to race next year.

You don’t think that in Formula 1 only prize money flows to the teams, do you? No, teams themselves also have to pay a lot of money to get a spot on the grid. This so-called entry fee is calculated on the basis of the number of points obtained in the previous season. And the dominance of the Dutch F1 wonder will be an expensive joke next year.

Entry fee in de Formule 1

First of all, teams have to pay 575,000 euros annually to be able to participate in the season. In addition, there is a rate per point. That is between 5,370 and 5,740 euros for most teams. Only the constructor who is the reigning world champion has to lap more: between 6,440 and 6,920 euros per point.

Thanks to Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing is firmly in the lead this Formula 1 season. In this year, with more points to be won than ever before, the F1 team already has 583 points to its name. This translates into almost 4 million euros, and that with eight races still on the agenda.

1,950 euros per point for Max Verstappen

Max shattered a record that had stood for ten years last Sunday when he crossed the line first at Monza. That was the tenth race in a row that he won and that has never happened before in the history of Formula 1. If Max Verstappen continues this triumphal march, he will also be presented with a hefty bill. There is also one entry fee for the drivers, keeping their super license (which is mandatory for F1 drivers) valid.

Although the FIA does not want to reveal how many drivers have to tap per point, it is known that the rate has increased sharply since last year. According to Motorsport.com, this rate is between 1,500 euros and 1,950 euros per point. The 364 points that Max Verstappen has already collected this Formula 1 season translates into 546,000 to 710,000 euros.

A million euros because of the many F1 points

As mentioned, the season is far from over. Thanks to his triumphant march, the Dutchman scores an average of 26 points per race. Huh, but that’s the maximum number of points you can get and he didn’t win every race, we hear you think. That’s right, he also scored points in the first three sprint races. Three more Formula 1 sprint races will also follow in the coming months.

Max Verstappen’s fleet: very expensive and very fast cars

If he continues on the same footing, he would be around 572 points at the end of the year. That means a bill between 858,000 and 1,115,000 euros. In an interview with an Austrian television channel, Max Verstappen is asked whether it was smart that he scored so many points in 2022 after he had already been crowned champion. “I don’t think about that at all. I just try to win every race,” said the two-time F1 world champion.

Max Verstappen does not have to pull out the wallet

“Moreover, I am afraid that we as Red Bull will have to pay that bill,” Helmut Marko adds. The senior at Red Bull also takes part in the conversation, together with team boss Christian Horner and former driver Sebastian Vettel. “I didn’t want to say that,” Verstappen replies with a laugh. In a serious note, Vettel continues: “It is ridiculous that in this sport you have to pay so much to participate.” An opinion shared by Max Verstappen and the Red Bull Formula 1 team.
