Markus Howard leads Baskonia to first victory of the season with stellar performance

A sensational Markus Howard (29 points, 32 rating) led Baskonia to its first victory of the season this Sunday, on the Río Breogán court (79-88) and in a game that the Vitorians got complicated in the final stretch of the third quarter but they clung to their star to always stay ahead.

Midway through the third quarter, Baskonia took a maximum lead of 18 points (44-62) that seemed to end the duel. The local coach, Veljko Mrsic, stopped the game with a timeout. And his team, in a flash, scared the Basques with a 6-0 run.

Joan Peñarroya, as he had done in the first quarter, also stopped the clash, but the Lugo team were determined and got within six (57-63) to reach the last quarter alive, in which Howard continued with his recital, decisive for prevent Breogán from completing its comeback.

American Codi Miller-Mcintyre showed off at the start of the match. He is called to have a major role in the Peñarroya team and in his debut he showed that he will not have problems assuming responsibility.

Between him and Markus Howard they punished the Lugo defense in the first quarter. Baskonia’s 2-10 start was put out by Momirov with a triple. Breogán hit back with a 7-0 run, but their rival soon doubled it on the scoreboard (9-18, min.5)

Mrsic stopped the game (11-22) and her team reacted with two consecutive triples -Momirov and Jogéla- and Joan Peñarroya also stopped Breogán’s reaction, which dominated the offensive rebound (19-22, min.9).

In the second quarter, the Lugo team turned off in attack. He prepared his attacks well but failed to finish, especially from the three-point line in comfortable positions. And he paid for it. Baskonia, with a stellar Markus Howard, shot up the score before the break.

The Vitorian team continued playing with comfortable income. Breogán did not take advantage of an unsportsmanlike behavior pointed out to Markus Howard, and his rival escaped with his maximum advantage (44-62). But Mrsic’s team never gives up, and he kept fighting until he came in alive in the final minutes. Howard appeared there to silence the Pazo. EFE
