Lobster ban ends in the Pacific Ocean – El Sol de México

This Tuesday, September 26, the ban on blue, green and red lobsters ended in waters under federal jurisdiction of the Pacific Ocean, including the Gulf of California. And tomorrow the fishing of this crustacean 2023-2024 begins, reports the Ministry of Agriculture in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).

The fishery for these species is carried out mainly in Baja California and Baja California Sur, where 65 percent of the total national production is obtained. It is one of the most socio-economically important for the area due to the economic benefits and the direct and indirect jobs it generates.

This year’s temporary ban was from March 1 to September 26. And from subsequent years it will apply from March 1 to September 30.

The measure is in force in the waters of federal jurisdiction of the Pacific Ocean up to the limits of the Exclusive Economic Zone.

According to the technical opinion of the National Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Inapesca), the Ministry of Agriculture indicated that there is no problem with starting the 2023-2024 lobster fishing season on September 27. The sustainability of the red lobster is not at risk.

Monitoring compliance with these guidelines will be the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture, through the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca) and the Ministry of the Navy (Semar), each of the agencies within the scope of their respective competencies, is specified in the DOF.
