Latvian Athletes Shine at International Tennis Tournament in Jelgava

At the international tennis tournament in Jelgava, Latvian athletes won in boys’ singles and girls’ doubles

The 2nd category competition of the European junior tennis tournament “Jelgava open 2023” was held in the U-16 age group, in which 72 athletes from nine countries participated. Latvian tennis players triumphed in boys’ singles and girls’ doubles.

The international tennis tournament was held in the “Zemgale” sports complex for the ninth year. This year, 29 of the 72 participants were Latvian athletes, including one from Jelgava, Ralfs Upenieks. As tournament organizer Mihails Ivanovskis, Ralfs Upenieks (352nd Tennis Europe ranking) made it to the second round of the main tournament, losing to a player from Norway (27th place Tennis Europe rank). It should be noted that Ralfs Upenieks started participating in the tournament from the main tournament.

In the boys’ competition, he won in singles Tennis Europe the 271st ranked player from Latvia Danila Folkheims, who defeated the Estonian player Edvin Averjanova (58th place) in the final with the result 5-7, 6-3 and 6-3 Tennis Europe rank). On the other hand, in the boys’ doubles, for the second year in a row, the Estonian couple Edvins Averjanovs and Ken Inks won the laurels, who beat the Latvian-Estonian duo Armanda Airi and Hugo Narmont in the final with the result 6-1 and 6-3.

In the girls competition, a player from Slovakia won the singles competition (87th place Tennis Europe ranking) Jesika Kolesarova, who defeated the Latvian player Keisija Bēržina (171st place) in the final with the result 6-3 and 6-1 Tennis Europe rank). The Latvian players Keisija Bērziņa and Oļesja Demčenkova triumphed in the doubles, who beat the Estonian-Lithuanian duo Elizabeta Averjanova and Lukni Vaitkevičuti in the final with a score of 6-3 and 6-1.

It should be emphasized that the number of participants in the competition was limited – 32 players in the main tournament and 32 in the qualification for boys’ singles and girls’ singles, 16 participants for boys’ doubles and girls’ doubles.

The tournament took place from September 3 to 9.
