Mike Verweij is not at all impressed with Ajax’s selection this season, he says in De Telegraaf’s Kick-Off podcast. The journalist is critical of the transfer expenses of director of football affairs Sven Mislintat and states that PSV has had a much better transfer period. In addition, Verweij is surprised about the appointment date of Alex Kroes as general manager of the Amsterdam team.

“There is a lot of doubt within Ajax about the fact that PSV has simply acquired much better players for only part of the amount,” Verweij broaches the subject. “And then with a lot of data in your hand you can point to how talented those players are,” the journalist sneers at the players Mislintat signed. “But I think that if you ask the average Ajax fan whether they prefer the Ajax or the PSV selection, nine out of ten simply prefer the PSV selection.”

“And that is of course very strange, that you spend 115 million without any guarantee of a good player. Josip Sutalo perhaps, but I didn’t think he played very well against Fortuna (0-0 draw, ed.). Anyway, he is a Croatian international, made his debut against France away under the highest pressure and he did very well. So that is probably a direct hit, but for the rest: who knows can say, really no one knows,” says one critical Verweij.

Alex Kroes
The communication from the Amsterdammers about the appointment date of Alex Kroes was also examined in the podcast. Edwin van der Sar’s successor can start in Amsterdam from March 15, 2024 due to a current non-competition clause from Kroes at AZ. “It is incomprehensible that Ajax is not doing everything in its power to bring him in now,” says Verweij. “The entire club is in trouble and money is being spent as if it is nothing for players, but it remains to be seen whether it is an added value or whether it is at FC Groningen level.”

“I am really surprised that the Supervisory Board is not doing everything it can to reach an agreement with AZ, so that he can start tomorrow. It is also a very strange signal to Alex Kroes,” the analyst continues. “Something like: we are not willing to do everything to make you general manager in the shortest possible time. I can imagine that, because things are of course going very well at Ajax,” a cynical Verweij concludes the subject.
