International Family Sports Festival: A Day of Outdoor Activities and Integration

With beautiful autumn weather in the middle of Rheydt – in the middle of the countryside: the international family sports festival offered ideal conditions for outdoor sporting activities.

Lots of interesting sports invited people to take part and could be experienced or admired up close. For example, archery, skating, BMX show driving, dance, baseball, football darts, football, basketball, handball, volleyball, hockey, tennis, chess, water sports, cricket, gliding as well as martial arts such as boxing, taekwondo, samurai and much more were offered.

For the baseball players of the Mönchengladbach Blackcaps, taking part in the international family sports festival was a successful performance in terms of recruiting young talent. According to their own statements, they recorded a high number of interested children and young people.

The international family sports festival, which was organized by the city sports association and the city’s municipal integration center, was intended to show that integration and successful coexistence take place, especially in and through sport.

The offers from sports clubs, sports enthusiasts and committed companies not only made it possible to try out many sports together, but also to talk to each other in a playful way.

The Rollbrettunion offered free beginner skateboard workshops including rental skateboards and protective equipment on Brucknerallee. A slalom skateboard contest also took place there – an official race of the International Slalom Skateboarding Association, which is also a qualifying race for the German riders for the World Skate Games 2024 in Italy. The Rollbrettunion program was rounded off with a BMX show ride.

The Mönchengladbach Aviation Association provided information about gliding in Mönchengladbach and exhibited a full-size glider.

Visitors were able to pick up a hockey stick at the Rheydter Spielverein stand. He was there with the German Hockey Association’s mobile hockey field. A special eye-catcher was the ten-meter football dartboard, which invited people to compete.

The NEW and the Rheydt sports swimming club invited people to the adjacent Rheydt municipal swimming pool. Those interested should actually be able to try canoeing there. But an action could not be implemented. There were tips from professionals and lots of information material. Everyone could do a little bit for their fitness in aqua courses. Anyone who didn’t have swimming trunks or a swimsuit with them could take a tour of the architecturally special building with its ten-meter diving platform.

While the Barmer health insurance company offered an information stand with body measurements and back measurements, the Stadtsparkasse invited smaller guests to have fun on the bouncy castle. With a volleyball court, a basketball court, a tennis event, table tennis tables and a chess game, visitors to the Hugo Junkers Park can expect further sporting activities.

Anyone who needed a break after so much sport had the opportunity to do so in the picnic area in front of the stage. The program was moderated by Thomas Schmitz. Among other things, different fighting techniques were shown there as well as show dance performances by the carnival club KG Schwarz-Gold Rheydt from 1899, the cheerleaders “Moonlight Cheerdance”, the soul dance community and the creative dance school “danceroom”. There was also live music. The band “Die von Eben”, singer/songwriter Daniel Michels and Mary, singer and pole dance acrobat, were there.
