Holy Cross and Bucknell Lead in Patriot League Football Weekly Awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Holy Cross collected two of the four Patriot League football weekly awards when the League office announced the honorees on Monday. Bucknell and Lafayette received one accolade apiece.

Crusaders’ fifth-year linebacker Jacob Dobbs claimed his third Patriot League Football Defensive Player of the Week honor after making 12 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and a sack in their 47-7 win over Colgate. Freshman cornerback Eli Thompson was named rookie of the week after recording two interceptions against the Raiders.

Lafayette sophomore quarterback Dean DeNobile received Patriot League Football Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for four touchdowns (two passing and two rushing) in the Leopards’ 28-20 win over Monmouth.

Bucknell junior defensive lineman Aneesh Vyas picked up Patriot League Football Special Teams Player of the Week with two blocked kicks against Penn. The West Chester, Ohio native has five blocked kicks in the past two seasons.

Bucknell junior safety John Schlendorf and sophomore wide receiver Eric Weatherly, Fordham junior linebacker James Conway and junior running back Julius Loughridge, Holy Cross junior wide receiver Justin Shorter and Lafayette senior linebacker Preston Forney all received honorable mentions for their performances on Saturday.

The Patriot League football players of the week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s football athletics communications contacts, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

Dean DeNobile, Lafayette, So., QB, Upper Saddle River, N.J./Morris Catholic

*DeNobile accounted for all four of Lafayette’s touchdowns in a 28-20 victory over Monmouth on Saturday.
*The sophomore quarterback completed 10-of-14 passes for 110 yards and two touchdown passes.
*He also rushed 12 times for 50 yards and two touchdowns to help the Leopards improve to 3-1.

PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jacob Dobbs, Holy Cross, 5th, LB, Macomb, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate

*Dobbs posted 12 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and one sack to help the Crusaders’ defense hold Colgate to seven points in a 47-7 victory.
*The fifth-year linebacker helped hold Colgate scoreless after its opening drive, earning the Turco Award for MVP of Holy Cross’s Homecoming Game.
*His 372 career tackles are eight shy of breaking into the Patriot League’s career top-10.

PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Aneesh Vyas, Bucknell, Jr., DL, West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West

*Vyas blocked two kicks against Penn, giving him five during the last two seasons.
*The junior defensive lineman blocked a 33-yard field-goal attempt in the second quarter.
*He also blocked an extra point attempt in the third quarter.

PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL ROOKIE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Eli Thompson, Holy Cross, Fr., CB, Rome, Ga./Darlington

*Thompson made four tackles and recorded the first two interceptions of his career in Holy Cross’s 47-7 victory over Colgate in their League opener.
*The freshman cornerback registered his first collegiate interception late in the third quarter to help set up a Crusaders’ scoring drive.
*He picked off his second pass on the Raiders’ next drive, helping a Holy Cross defense hold Colgate scoreless after its first drive of the game.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
John Schlendorf, Bucknell, Jr., S, Toms River, N.J./Donovan Catholic

*Schlendorf matched his career high with 14 tackles against Penn. He also registered 1.0 TFL and one pass breakup.

Eric Weatherly, Bucknell, So., WR, St. John’s Fla./Bartram Trail

*Weatherly caught two touchdown passes for 95 yards on six receptions against Penn. They were the first two touchdowns of the sophomore wide receiver’s career.

James Conway, Fordham, Jr., LB, Omaha, Neb./Millard West

*Conway made a game-high 10 tackles with 1.0 tackle for loss (TFL) of four yards. He added one pass breakup and blocked a field goal in the Rams’ 44-0 win over Stonehill.

Julius Loughridge, Fordham, Jr., RB, Houston, Texas/Death Creek
*Loughridge rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries to lead Fordham to a 44-0 victory over Stonehill. It was his second straight 100-yard rushing game. He also caught two passes for 12 yards.

Justin Shorter, Holy Cross, Jr., WR, Swedesboro, N.J./Blair Academy

*Shorter finished with seven receptions for 112 yards and two touchdowns in Holy Cross’s 47-7 victory in their League season opener against Colgate.

Preston Forney, Lafayette, Sr., LB, Southlake, Texas/Carroll

*Forney made a game-high nine tackles with 2.0 TFLs, one sack and a forced fumble in Lafayette’s 28-20 victory over Monmouth. He helped the Leopards’ defense hold the Hawks to 59 rushing yards.
