Final stand Untouchables Paderborn – Heidenheim Heideköpfe 1-2 (best-of-5 series)

The Heidenheim Heideköpfe are one win away from the seventh German baseball championship in the club’s history. On Saturday evening, they defeated the Untouchables 7-4 in game three of the best-of-5 final series to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Seven runs in the seventh inning ensured the decision in the exciting game. Games four and possibly five will take place on Sunday from 12 p.m. in Paderborn.

Until the middle of the sixth inning, the spectators at Maple Ballpark saw a pitchers’ duel. No runs made it onto the scoreboard. Paderborn broke the spell in the bottom half of the sixth when Linus Nixdorf cleared the bases loaded with a 3-run triple. A little later, an RBI single from Tobias Maul increased the lead to 4-0 for the Untouchables.

But the Heidekopfs turned the momentum and the game around in the next half inning. Kilian Redle made it 2:4 for Heidenheim with a 2-run single and started the game-winning rally. A sac bunt from Phillip Schulz pushed the next guest run over the plate. Three batters later, the bases were loaded and Billy Germaine took the opportunity for a 3-run double to make it 6:4. Germaine also crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Shawn Larry.

After that, Mike Bolsenbroek didn’t allow the Paderborn team to make a comeback and took the win with six strikeouts in four 2-hit relief innings. Drew Janssen had previously collected eight strikeouts in just over five innings, but also gave up four runs on three hits and three walks. Player-coach Matt Kemp took the loss. He gave up four hits, six runs (4 ER) and one base on balls in three relief innings. Benjamin Thaqi had three hits, one run and two walks as a starter.
