The German national baseball team is close to reaching the quarter-finals at the European Championships in the Czech Republic. One day after the clear win against Belgium (17:4), national coach Jendrick Speer’s team won 2-0 against Israel on Monday evening. Third baseman Eric Brenk from the Bonn Capitals became the decisive player with one run and one run batted in. With the victory, the German selection took the lead in the four-team preliminary group D ahead of the Israelis and Switzerland, with opening opponent Belgium in last place. If Belgium wins against Israel on Tuesday (11 a.m.), Germany will already be in the knockout round before the subsequent group final against the Swiss (5:30 p.m.). With a win against Switzerland, the German team would be group winners. The top two teams in each season advance to the quarterfinals.
