Almost at the same time as their Herons cousins and a few kilometers away from Ponte Buggianese, Gema Pallacanestro Montecatini also closed their pre-season with a success on Saturday afternoon. He did it at the Palasport Fontevivo in San Miniato, prevailing against the hosts Etrusca with an overall score of 78-84 (12-23, 22-21, 22-25 and 22-15 the partial scores). The last official match between the two teams, which took place in February 2020 before the outbreak of the pandemic, was a real spin: the red and whites, then led by coach Federico Barsotti, arrived at the PalaTerme as record holders of group A of Serie B and they were surprised by Giacomo Cardelli’s MontecatiniTerme Basketball, the last force in the championship but clearly on the rise. It only happened three seasons ago, but it feels like a geological era has passed. Now, with the thermal lions in the National Serie B and Etrusca slipping into the Interregional B after relegation to the playouts last season, the situation has been reversed. Also for this reason the over 20 points collected in three out of four fractions by Savoldelli and his teammates sound like a small alarm bell: history does not take the field and today’s San Miniato still remains a lower category team, which after the excellent approach from Marco Del Re’s men, they played on equal terms for three quarters also thanks to a few too many errors from the rossoblù.
However, the absences of two elements such as Mastrangelo and Angelucci constitute a robust alibi for Gema: “A team that has changed eight out of ten elements needs to work as fully as possible and we are not doing that at the moment – explains coach Del Re – Not everything went perfectly but the absences forced us to field some rather new quintets and despite this the boys responded well. Clearly there is still a long way to go and a lot to work, also in view of the championship debut against Legnano, for which I hope to recover both Angelucci and Mastrangelo”. Work in the gym which for Gema will start again today after two days of rest granted by the technical staff.
