Former CEO of Doyen Criticizes Sentence Given to Rui Pinto in Football Leaks Trial

Football Leaks. Former CEO of Doyen says Rui Pinto’s sentence “could have been more severe”

The former CEO of the Doyen investment fund considered this Monday that the suspended sentence of four years in prison imposed on Rui Pinto in the Football Leaks trial “could have been more severe”.

“For a long time, many people questioned what we said and that, in fact, there was an attempt at extortion and it was not successful, because we never intended to pay either. We wanted to seek out the criminals and bring them to justice. The court fully accepted our version of the facts. He was punished very well, I think it could have been a more severe sentence, but that was what the court understood”, said Nélio Lucas.

For the former executive director of Doyen Sports Investment, who saw the court consider this Monday as proven the extortion attempt by defendants Rui Pinto and Aníbal Pinto, the regret expressed in the trial by the creator of Football Leaks was only instrumental and that Rui Pinto knew he was committing a crime by demanding money to stop publishing Doyen’s confidential information.

“He himself admitted that he regretted it, because his life was in a mess, so it is regret that helps him the most. He knew exactly what he was doing, what he did, he was advised by someone who should have known even more than him, someone who ended up being punished as well. Justice was done and I’m very happy about that”, he told journalists as he left the Central Criminal Court of Lisbon, where he attended the reading of the ruling.

Rui Pinto was sentenced this Monday to a single sentence of four years in prison, suspended upon execution. The court found the creator of Football Leaks guilty of the crimes of attempted extortion of the Doyen investment fund, of three crimes of aggravated correspondence tampering with lawyers João Medeiros, Rui Costa Pereira and Inês Almeida Costa and five of illegitimate access to Doyen, Sporting , Portuguese Football Federation, PLMJ law firm and the Attorney General’s Office.
