Football: Traditional club Ajax continues to sink into chaos

The Dutch classic between Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam with ÖFB defender Gernot Trauner, which was canceled on Sunday, continued on Wednesday without spectators and ended with a crushing 4-0 defeat for Ajax. The game was abandoned in the 56th minute because of repeated pyrotechnics when the score was 3-0 for Feyenoord. The situation at traditional club Ajax has become even more dire.

The referee stopped the game in Amsterdam in accordance with league rules after fans fired flares onto the field twice. No visiting fans were present at the game. On Wednesday it was Feyenoord’s Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez who completed his treble and made the official final score. Trauner played as captain at Feyenoord.

The Dutch football association KNVB decided that the remaining 35 minutes on Wednesday would be played without spectators. While Feyenoord is in third place, the worry lines in the Ajax leadership have deepened. The Dutch record champions are currently only 14th in the 18-team league and have only won one of the first five league games under coach Maurice Steijn.

After violent protests from their own fans, the chairman of the supervisory board, Pier Eringa, resigned shortly before the game. He explained that he was not “deaf and blind” to the criticism. On Sunday, Ajax parted ways with German football director Sven Mislintat after just four months. Mislintat no longer has full support, it was said. He is in focus because of a possible conflict of interest in the move of Croatian Borna Sosa from Mislintat’s former club VfB Stuttgart to Ajax. Just four years ago, Ajax reached the semi-finals of the Champions League before losing to Tottenham due to the away goals rule that was still in effect at the time.
