Fiba Foundation Welcomes New President and Appointments for 2023-2027

The honorary president of Fiba, Hamane Niang, has been appointed new president of the Fiba Foundation. Other important appointments took place at the same time for the period 2023-2027. President Niang replaces Horacio Muratore, another honorary president of Fiba. He took up this position in 2019 and will continue to work as a member of management in the new cycle. Additionally, the Executive Committee appointed Manuel V. Pangilinan, President Emeritus of the Philippine Basketball Federation, as Vice President of the Fiba Foundation.

The Fiba Foundation Steering Committee has reached an important milestone by including three women for the first time, including Fiba Hall of Famer Michelle Timms, as well as a legendary player and World Cup winner. Fiba in the person of Predrag Stojakovic.

“Together with my fellow management members, I will work to ensure that the Fiba Foundation continues to grow stronger. We will use basketball as a tool for good, while preserving and developing the cultural heritage of our fantastic sport,” says Hamane Niang.

The social and heritage component of Fiba, the Foundation uses the power of basketball to initiate positive social changes and to reference the entire history of international basketball. Its two main pillars are the “Basketball For Good” program and that dedicated to the enrichment of cultural heritage.

Basketball For Good” priorities include projects around the world to support Mini Basketball, youth leadership and community impact, while those relating to cultural heritage focus on supporting and developing collections in connection with basketball and historical archives, on the Patrick Baumann Basketball House, on the community of basketball historians and on the Fiba Hall of Fame.

Belgium, Brazil, Nigeria and Mali major beneficiaries!

Nations like Belgium, Brazil, Nigeria and Mali are celebrating good progress in the latest update of the Fiba World Ranking Women, presented by Nike.

Very recently crowned with a historic triumph at the Fiba Women’s Euro Basket 2023, Belgium (6th) moved up one place to take the best ranking in its history. With 654.6 points, it is now ahead of France (643.8) and is only 0.8 points behind Canada. The Top 5 has not changed. China won the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup 2023, consolidating its 2nd place.

Brazil (612.6 points) is back in the Top 10 after gaining 7 places thanks to its unexpected coronation at the FIBA ​​Women’s AmeriCup 2023. Victorious over the USA in the final, the Brazilians won a 6th continental coronation.

Nigeria (528.9 points), moved from 18th to 11th place, experienced the same progression as Brazil. This is the result of her domination at the Fiba Women’s AfroBasket 2023 with a 4th consecutive title.
