Carlos Sainz won the Singapore GP, leading for all 62 laps. For Ferrari it is the first success in 2023. Also on the podium are Lando Norris’ McLaren and Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes. The race had a twist on the last lap, when George Russell – third and attacking Norris – he ended up against the barriers, leaving the way for Hamilton to take third place and Leclerc to fourth. World championship leader Max Verstappen finished fifth, after starting eleventh. Ferrari returns to success after 26 races: Maranello’s last first place dates back to the 2022 Austrian GP, when Leclerc won. For Sainz it is the second victory at the wheel of Ferrari.
“It’s an incredible feeling, I thank the Ferrari team, a great effort was made to return to winning ways after a difficult start: we did everything perfectly.” Carlos Sainz admits that he is “over the moon” after the success in Singapore which brings the Red Team back to the top step of the podium after a long drought. “We had to try to manage the degradation of the tires – said the Spaniard who also competed in a tactical motorcycle race -, everything worked perfectly, we managed to get to the end. I thought about keeping up, we managed and led the car at the finish line. I’m over the moon.”
“I’m very happy for the team. Over the past few weeks we’ve worked hard to understand the car better, and today we were rewarded. Congratulations to Carlos: he did an exceptional job all weekend.” Charles Leclerc thus congratulated his Ferrari teammate for the success in Singapore. “We decided to start on the Softs to overtake George (Russell) at the start: it was the right choice and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately I lost some positions due to traffic in the pit lane during our only pit stop, under the Safety car – he regretted – But even with this, our execution today was excellent, and I’m very happy about it. It’s fantastic to see the step forward we’ve made in terms of overall performance, we hope to reconfirm ourselves already in Japan.”
