Experience the Medieval Times at Vic-la-Gardiole: A Weekend of Historical Re-enactment and Festivities

This medieval reconstruction is organized by the Friends of Vicois association on Saturday and Sunday 3 September.

Both a pre-return party and a historical re-enactment of the 13th century, the sixth Medieval of Vic-la-Gardiole takes place in the center of the village this Saturday (baleti at 9 p.m.) and tomorrow Sunday September 3 from 9 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. We owe this event to the association Les Amis vicois, which organizes it with great care (the asphalt is covered with hay) and commitment. “The costumes are made from the beginning of the year by our two seamstresses, notes Maud Penin, the president, dressed in a long carmine dress. We now have a good forty. We also try not to offer the same entertainment from one year to the next. This festival is primarily intended for Vicois and people from the surrounding area” she adds. Thus, this year, ponies have replaced donkeys.

Dances and parades

For a weekend, ladies and gentlemen, knights and lords put on their costumes for parades and demonstrations of medieval dances. In addition to the local troupe, Les danseurs de Léocadie (named after the listed 12th century church), there are also guests: the COMHA association from Agde, a fife and tambourine player, two troubadours and their camp of cloth.

The stalls of craftsmen follow one another along the main artery, including a wooden merry-go-round powered by the energy of the parents perched on a swing. Many terraces allow you to sit down to taste medieval specialities.

medieval camp

Near the town hall, three associations have set up a medieval camp where, during these two days, demonstrations and workshops for adults and children are offered. It is the beating heart of these Medieval times. The Merces company makes it possible to become familiar with the handling of weapons, the manufacture of coats of mail, the work of leather, illumination and cooking. “I make sure that nothing modern is present to offer the best possible immersion in the 13th century, specifies Philippe the camp leader. The association Au siècle d’en temps offers to discover the weaving of wool, the striking coins or calligraphy. Archery sessions await the children in the afternoon. Gamela Nostra has set up its traveling tavern.

Saturday, September 2: grand parade at 5.30 p.m.; 8:30 p.m. introduction to traditional dances; 9 p.m. Sunday, September 3: Opening 9 a.m.; dubbing of knights at 10:30 a.m.; medieval dances 11am; Storytelling at 11:30 a.m.; introduction to traditional dances at 2 p.m.; return of the Knights of the Holy Land at 4 p.m., Grand parade of Sainte-Léocadie with troops, volunteers and the public at 5:30 p.m.
