With an assist and a goal in stoppage time, Fabian Reese defeated his hometown club. The Kiel native won with Hertha BSC at Holstein. But his most important action took him into the opposing fan block after the final whistle.

The final act of his return to his old place of work in the Holstein Stadium was a matter of the heart for Fabian Reese. The striker in the Hertha BSC jersey had just contributed significantly to Berlin’s 3-2 (2-0) victory at his former club Holstein Kiel with the winning goal from a penalty kick and an assist. Shortly after the end of the second division game on Sunday, everything sporting took a back seat for the Kiel native in view of the fate of a Holstein supporter. The 16-year-old is suffering from lymph node cancer.

With a plastic bucket in his hand, Reese walked across the pitch from the Hertha to the Holstein fan block. The bucket contained money that the Berlin fan scene donated for the young man and his family.

“A decent sum was raised,” said the 24-year-old in a Sky interview. “And then they came to me. ‘Be careful, you don’t want to hand it over.’ He could only ‘take his hat off. I think being separated in the colors and united in the matter fits quite well,” he said. “I think it was a nice gesture that made football extremely irrelevant.”

The Kiel fan scene had launched a call for donations and announced that they would collect donations for the game against Berlin. Hertha BSC also pointed out the campaign in its travel information.

Reese eleven years in the Kiel jersey

As a connecting element, Reese was the best cast. Born in Kiel and active in Holstein’s youth ranks for the first eight years, he returned to his hometown club for three years in 2020. Now he introduced himself as a Hertha player – and was successful there too.

He prepared Berlin’s lead when Smail Prevljak successfully headed his cross to make it 1-0. And when things got strange in the final phase of the game, when Kiel goalkeeper Timon Weiner parried Haris Tabakovic’s first penalty (88th), but the ball was on the penalty spot again four minutes later, Reese took responsibility and scored the winner. Even if that ultimately remained a minor matter for him.
