When flares flew onto the pitch again in the 55th minute, the referee whistled the game off.Both groups of fans had already set off a lot of pyrotechnics in the stands and an Ajax fan had caused a forced break by throwing a beer cup.
As a result, riots broke out in front of the stadium, some fans clashed with the police and threw paving stones. Players and coaches from both teams stayed in the dressing rooms, and journalists were also not allowed to leave the stadium for security reasons.
“This has nothing to do with football and being a fan. You are playing with the safety of the players, their fellow fans and themselves. Shame on you,” Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius wrote on X.
Interruptions or even abandonments of the game are not uncommon in duels between Ajax and Feyenoord. For example, the two teams’ cup semi-finals in April 2023 were interrupted because objects were thrown onto the field. The former Bremer Davy Klaassen suffered a laceration at the time.
