Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws from Davis Cup for Spain, Albert Ramos Viñolas to Replace Him

The tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, recently eliminated from the US Open in the semifinals, will not play the Davis Cup for Spain next week in Valencia, in the World Group Finals, and his place will be taken by the Catalan Albert Ramos Viñolas.

The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation announced today that Alcaraz will not be part of the team that will compete from September 12 to 17 in Group C based in Valencia along with Serbia, the Czech Republic and South Korea. Alcaraz’s decision, who will be displaced from the first place in the world ranking by Novak Djokovic from next Monday, was known after falling to the Russian Daniil Medvedev by 7-6 (3), 6-1, 6-3 and 6- 3, in the run-up to Sunday’s grand final of the last Grand Slam of the season.

So the Spanish team, in which former tennis player David Ferrer will make his debut as captain, will be made up of Roberto Bautista Agut, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, doubles player Marcel Granollers and Catalan Ramos.

Ramos, 35, will join the Spanish team’s training camp in Valencia this afternoon after a season in which he was a finalist in Gstaad, where he lost to the Argentine Pedro Cachín, and a semi-finalist at the Córdoba Open, while reaching the quarterfinals. final at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro.
