Harpstedt – The Budo-Sportakademie Harpstedt made 38 of 70 participants at the International Budo-Camp in the Netherlands, which their operator Olaf van Ellen has been organizing for 20 years. “The children and young people between the ages of seven and 18 spent a varied time with exciting activities outside of the four-day martial arts training.

The spectrum ranged from the high ropes course to archery, volleyball, football and table tennis to laser tag and arrow tag. Despite the persistent rain, it was all in all great fun,” sums up van Ellen.

The park’s own disco and the swimming pool were also attractions. Excursions “in the double decker” would have led to the amusement park Slagharen and to Dinoland in Zwolle. On four days, six speakers offered training sessions for the participants – adjusted according to age. “The students were able to train or try out Jiu-Jitsu, Atemi-Combat, Judo, Ken-Jutsu, Kickboxing, Shootboxing and KravMaga,” explains van Ellen, who also trained himself with his Budo sports academy colleague Denis Pitkowski. The latter also passed his black belt exam in kickboxing. Almost 40 participants met the requirements for the white and yellow belt in judo. “In Jiu-Jitsu, the Harpstedt students passed their next exams with very good results,” says van Ellen happily. He specifically mentions Carlotta von Morenhoffen (orange belt), Theodor Alban (yellow-orange belt) and Katharina Ruscher (yellow belt). For the first time there were also championships in Sports-Kenjutsu, fighting with padded swords: “The Harpstedters Alexander Fröhlich and Lio van Ellen each made first place in their age group. They were happy about great trophies.”

At the end of the camp, after the distribution of trophies and graduations, all participants got into a party mood. “After a whole week without a mobile phone, some took the opportunity to exchange phone numbers in order to make an appointment for the summer holidays in 2024 – for the next International Budo Camp in Holland. But before that, we’re going to the 36th Budo Camp in Sri Lanka with some members of the sports school during the autumn holidays,” says Olaf van Ellen.
