Spain’s football players have decided to end their boycott after the country’s football federation (RFEF) said it would make “immediate and profound changes” to its structure.

This happened after negotiations that lasted more than seven hours and were not completed until early in the morning, at 5 a.m. The players and representatives of the RFEF, the National Sports Council (CSD) and the women’s players’ union FUTPRO were involved.

“The players have expressed their concerns about the need for deep changes,” said CSD president Victor Francos. “A joint committee will be established between RFEF, CSD and players to follow up on the agreements, which will be signed tomorrow.”

After hours of negotiations, Francos spoke to the press:

Spanish players end boycott after promises from the football association

Since the affair surrounding the unwanted kiss by Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales to player Jennifer Hermoso at the presentation of the gold World Cup medals, there has been a lot of commotion within the Spanish team.

The playing group announced at the end of August that it would no longer play until Rubiales was removed from his position. That happened, and national coach Jorge Vilda also disappeared from the scene.

At the end of last week, 39 players (including almost the entire World Cup selection) had announced that they still did not want to play for Spain, because in their view the culture at the association had not changed.

Two players not present

Twenty players who said they were boycotting the team were called up by new coach Montse Tome. And although they all reported for training on Tuesday, two decided to leave the team for “personal reasons”. According to Spanish media, this concerns defender Mapi León and midfielder Patri Guijarro.

The Spanish team is preparing for Nations League matches against Sweden (Friday) and Switzerland (next Tuesday).
