The signs are unmistakable: Borussia Dortmund is on the verge of a remarkable conclusion. BVB will secure the services of Werder Bremen’s striker Niclas Füllkrug. How it came about.

The change from Niclas Füllkrug does not seem to be far off, national coach Hansi Flick provided another indication of this on Thursday afternoon. When presenting his squad for the upcoming international matches next week, he made a benevolent statement about a possible change of the national striker to Borussia Dortmund. “There is no question that he can help the club with his personality and his quality,” said Flick about the upcoming transfer of the 30-year-old attacker from Werder Bremen.

As part of the squad announcement for the upcoming international matches against Japan and France, Flick indicated that Füllkrug also had other options. “The selection he had or has is already good in that form. Ultimately he has to decide for himself where I have the chance to play, where do I feel comfortable, which club suits me,” said the 58-year-old. However, he does not have any direct influence on a player’s decision, emphasized Flick. Basically, he only listens to talks with national players about possible changes of club and lets the pros talk about their ambitions and motives.

Füllkrug’s move to Dortmund is imminent one day before the end of Friday’s transfer window. At BVB, in contrast to Werder Bremen, the attacker could also be recommended for further tasks in the DFB jersey at international club level in the Champions League.

Flick does without Goretzka and Werner – and appoints a 32-year-old newcomer

Hansi Flick makes a big cut in the national team nine months before the home European Championship. When nominating for the international matches against Japan and France, the national coach waived some supposedly seeded players.

Flick had brought Füllkrug to the national team last fall. With two goals, the center forward was one of the very few bright spots in the botched Qatar World Cup. In total, the attacker has scored seven goals in his nine international matches so far. Füllkrug is also part of Flick’s squad for the upcoming games in Wolfsburg against Japan (September 9) and in Dortmund against France (September 12).

Full pitcher commitment means rethinking at BVB

BVB coach Edin Terzic was still covered on Thursday afternoon. Tenor: Füllkrug is a Werder player, out of respect he does not want to comment further on the personnel. Instead, however, Bremen’s football boss Clemens Fritz looked deeply: “We are in contact with a club regarding Niclas and have largely reached an agreement. There are still a few details to be clarified. So I don’t want to name any names just yet. But it is an option that suits all sides.”

On Wednesday there was movement in the talks between Bremen and BVB. According to information from BILD, a transfer fee of around 13 million euros is being discussed between Werder and Borussia. There would also be millions of euros in bonus payments. The medical check in the Ruhr area is to follow this Thursday.

Actually, BVB had only planned to pump a maximum of around ten million euros into the squad. But then the BVB bosses around Sebastian Kehl, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, consultant Matthias Sammer and trainer Terzic changed their plan. And after the playful start to the season (1-0 against Cologne, 1-1 against Bochum) they are ready to spend more money than planned.

Dortmund would have invested around 62 million euros in transfer payments in this transfer window with Füllkrug after the purchases of Felix Nmecha (30 million euros) and Marcel Sabitzer (19 million euros). This corresponds almost exactly to the amount Dortmund wanted to invest in Real Madrid after Jude Bellingham left (103 million euros).

In addition, he fits into the sought-after profile of coach Terzic. The coach wanted a second clear target player for the storm, who can fix balls and set the scene for his teammates. Problem: Füllkrug fights regular striker Sébastien Haller. In the year before the European Championships at home he would not have been seeded under Terzic. However, Füllkrug is likely to get his appearances in three competitions (championship, DFB Cup, Champions League) – and can probably also appear in the national team as a BVB player with a different self-image.
