Basket Landes Claims Victory in Decimated ASVEL to Win the Match of Champions

Against a decimated ASVEL, Basket Landes won this Friday, September 15 at the Halle Carpentier the Match of Champions, after two consecutive failures (77-60).

Basket Landes has given us the habit of bringing home one title per season. History will not be disrupted in this 2023-2024 financial year. Julie Barennes’ players, outgoing winners of the Coupe de France, won the traditional Champions Match this Friday evening at the Halle Carpentier against Lyon, the reigning French champion.

Without Marine Johannès and Gabby Williams, still in the WNBA, nor Julie Allemand, Juste Jocyte, Endy Miyem, Sandrine Gruda and with only four pro players (Fauthoux, Quevedo, Chartereau-Chéry, Ciak), ASVEL had practically no chance against a Basket Landes team ready for the event, with nine of its ten elements.

Eye-catching young Lyonnaises

In front of Tony Parker and all the elite of French women’s basketball, the Landaises showed off their physical domination. Despite the first points from the young Justine Mouyokolo, Julie Barennes’ players took the lead against the Lyonnaises who were too passive in defense (8-19, 7th). While Luisa Geiselsoder had fun in the racket, the Lionesses did not unlock their outside counter in the first quarter (13-21).

David Gautier’s players held on with their Espoirs, notably the young interior Aïcha Camara and a good passage from Marine Fauthoux (21-24, 14th, 24-29, 16th). Except that Basket Landes had many more forces present, notably the Spaniard Angela Salvadores (12 points in the first half, 18 points and 6 assists in total, MVP of the Match). All while applying constant off-road pressure. Consequence: there was already a 10-unit gap at the break (29-39).

A deeper Landes bank

The match got heated upon returning from the locker room with the exploits of Alexia Chartereau-Chéry (11 points) and Marine Fauthoux (19 points) on one side and the collective play of the Landaises on the other. But the euphoria could not last on the Lyon side with too many errors from young and old (41-58, 26th).

Stronger in all sectors, the teammates of Alexis Peterson and Samatha Fuehring (12 points each) simply dominated the debates, taking advantage of the generosity of the Lyon zone. Without dispute. Helena Ciak (15 points, 6 rebounds) tried to bring her teammates back but too late, moneytime had already started. The young Landes Aby Diallo was also entitled to her minutes.

Céline Dumerc’s first title… on the other side

After two failures in 2021 and 2022, Basket Landes won its third Champions Match. Note that this is Céline Dumerc’s first title as sports director of her favorite club.

“It’s good to have won because we didn’t really know where we were in the preparation. But we must remain lucid, ASVEL was decimated opposite. Despite everything, I am happy with the state of mind of my players because when you are a coach, there is one thing you cannot do, and that is coach players who don’t want to. Mine want it. But there are still areas for progress before the start of the season,” noted Julie Barennes, happy and serious at the press conference.

In eight days, ASVEL will begin its LFB season in La Roche-sur-Yon while Basket Landes will go to Bourges next Sunday.

In Paris (Halle Carpentier).
