Arthur Fils after his elimination at the US Open: “Very disappointed”

“In what state of mind do you come out after a match like that lost in five sets?
A little disappointed, very disappointed even. But it was a good match, he was very good in the important moments. It’s sure that now, after these five sets, I’m a little tired but it’s experience, I know how to approach the next Grand Slam in Australia. I take positives from it. There have been some good, some less good. This is the match, you have to know how to deal with it. He was a little better than me.

Did you regret going out to change at the end of the fourth while you were master of the court at that time?
The game before I was out, I thought maybe I should do the same, maybe it was a good thing. Unfortunately, that was not the case. It’s gained experience, I know that the next time I won’t come off the court after winning a set when I don’t have cramps (against Tallon Griekspoor, Fils had suffered).

We felt that in this fifth set, you could have reversed the trend despite everything, did you have this feeling on the court?
At 4-3 (he trailed 4-1, two breaks behind), I was 0-30. At 5-4 I have a volley in the racket that I plaster, horrible. It’s tennis, that’s how it is. Next time, I’ll let her pass because I think she’s going into the tarp, but hey… I hesitated and took her.

“I played two five sets in a row so I understand that we can last a long time on the ground, that it’s just a question of experience”

How did you feel physically after the five-set fight already in the first round?
It was fine, I didn’t have too much trouble. I think I could have played six or seven sets. I had recovered well from two days ago when it was tension cramps so it didn’t leave too many marks. It is sure that the legs pull and you feel that it is complicated on certain races. But today there was no tension so it was fine.

What lessons do you draw from this Grand Slam marked by your first victory at this level?
My first two Grand Slams were a bit complicated. I played Davidovich (Fokina) twice. There I understood a little how it happened. I played two five sets in a row so I understand that we can last a long time on the field, that it’s just a question of experience, of knowing how to manage the good times and the slightly more complicated times. Australia will be a new experience. »
