Analyzing the Most Overrated Teams in the NFL: Why the New York Jets Fall Short

MIAMI — We have officially arrived at the 21st season of Diagonal Guru, and as I always tell you, thanks for the support throughout all these years.

The wait for the offseason can sometimes get long, but to be honest, the NFL doesn’t stop all year long, and with the draft, free agency, schedule, and training camps, we’ve got some anxiety under control.

However, the years go by and history does not change; There are always teams that are oversized for a new campaign.

The candidates for the most overrated teams for this season are: Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers.

Which brings us to the obvious question: What is the most overrated team in the NFL?

And in my opinion, a priori, the answer is simple.

Of all the teams I mentioned above, there are only two that didn’t make the postseason last year: the Jets and the Lions.

I’m not saying the NFL is a straightforward equation, because we all know that last season’s success doesn’t necessarily mean much for next season; and if not, ask the Los Angeles Rams from last year.

However, my answer is the New York Jets, who I think are being set unrealistic expectations.

Let me make it clear that I love the young core of the Jets, led by the reigning Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the year in Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner. I also have no doubt that the Jets will take a step forward this year, after the acquisition of Aaron Rodgers, considering that New York was a thorn in the side of many last season despite having practically no contribution from the quarterback position.

Rodgers is probably the most high-profile quarterback in the NFL right now, and throughout the past year we’ve talked about his celebrity offseason, the possibility of him replacing Alex Trebek (God rest his soul) on Jeopardy, his controversial statements regarding the COVID vaccine, his experience with Ayahuasca, his retirement into obscurity as well as his potential sports retirement, given that he left the door open until the last moment, his departure from the Green Bay Packers, his leadership skills and his relationship with the young wide receivers of Green Bay.

On his weekly appearance on The Pat McAfee Show he always seemed to leave us with glowing statements, and in his opening press conference, he displayed brutal honesty, which, in my opinion, was very refreshing, considering how many times quarterbacks seem like robots declaring.

On the field, Rodgers is not coming off his best season. He threw 12 interceptions, the most since 2008, and he will turn 40 in December.

Personally, I think Rodgers still has a chance to be one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL, and he’s been noted to be motivated by the change of air, and has been around every organized team activity this offseason.

The Jets should have an elite defense, and they added Dalvin Cook, who should make a fantastic running duo along with Breece Hall, who is coming back from a serious injury suffered last year.

Again, the Jets should improve on last season, when they went 7-10 with Zach Wilson and Mike White at quarterback.

Now, from there to considering them a potential Super Bowl candidate, it seems to me that there is a long way.

Of course Rodgers in New York was an impossible combination to pass up for HBO, who had the Jets in Hard Knocks, and that has only raised expectations.

What does Vegas think?

He thinks the Jets are the sixth-most favorite to win the Super Bowl at odds of 14 to 1.

Honestly, it seems like an exaggeration to me, and I believe that Las Vegas sees in these Jets a perfect opportunity to extract easy money from people who are prisoners of the moment.

Consider the following facts: The Jets haven’t made the playoffs in 12 years, they haven’t won in Miami since 2015, and they’ve lost the last 14 games to the New England Patriots, whom I consider the worst team in the division this year.

On top of that, judging by their opponents’ record in 2022, the Jets have the sixth-toughest schedule in the NFL and their offensive line is a giant question mark.

The best offensive tackle is Duane Brown, who was on the disabled list until recently while recovering from shoulder surgery. Mekhi Becton has struggled with weight problems and knee injuries, and could be right tackle, but at the moment he has more questions than answers. Outside of those two, the Jets don’t have reliable options at the ends of the offensive line.

Rodgers doesn’t have the same mobility he did a few years ago, and it’s imperative that they protect him. And with the sudden retirement of Corey Davis, I don’t see any reliable receivers outside of Wilson; To my eyes, Allen Lazard is more of a 3 than a 2.

The Jets are going to get better, but I don’t see them as Super Bowl contenders. For them, the start of the season will be vital: they face the Buffalo Bills, Cowboys, Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs to start the season, with the good news that the two divisional duels will be at home.

Time will tell.

As is customary in the first column of each season, we go with my predictions for the entire campaign:

AFC It is: Miami Dolphins

AFC West: Kansas City Chiefs

AFC North: Cincinnati Bengals

AFC On: Jacksonville Jaguars

AFC Wild Cards: Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers y Los Angeles Chargers

NFC East: Philadelphia Eagles

NFC Oeste: San Francisco 49ers

NFC Norte: Green Bay Packers

NFC On: New Orleans Saints

NFC Wildcards: Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders y Detroit Lions.

Super Bowl LVIII: Cincinnati Bengals a San Francisco 49ers

And in honor of today’s theme, I leave you with THE BEST 10 PASSES OF AARON RODGERS’ CAREER. Jets fans hope to see more of this this season.

*Local teams are in second place

POWER 6

As I always say, it is never good to play every game. In other words, there are some that are better to pass up. For this reason, I decided to add this section, to present my six favorite teams with a bet line. Opinions are welcome, since the idea is to add an attribute that is beneficial to readers. The order of the teams is not random and the predictions do not affect the total statistics.

WASHINGTON COMMANDERS

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

GREEN BAY PACKERS

BUFFALO BILLS

MIAMI DOLPHINS

SUICIDE POOL, ‘ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE’

There are many of us who are in this type of competition. In this case the bet line does not matter. Just don’t repeat any team throughout each week. Of course, these predictions will not affect the total statistics either. In brackets, the teams chosen so far.
