Algeria Clinches Prestigious Victory on Senegal’s Home Turf in Preparation for African Cup of Nations

On the field of the reigning African champion, the National Team was able to impose itself and be clinical. A very good preparation less than 4 months before the African Cup of Nations.

Djamel Belmadi wanted to gauge his team, evaluate it in particularly difficult conditions: here he is! At the Stade Abdoulaye Wade, where Senegal had never lost (and had, more generally, not lost at home since… 2012), Algeria did not always shine but it knew how to do the round back when necessary.

Thanks to a goal from Farès Chaïbi in the 63rd minute, from a very distant free kick from Riyad Mahrez, the Greens can return to their respective clubs with the feeling of duty accomplished.

Anthony Mandrea (8,5): His presence in the starting lineup proves that he is now number 1 in Algeria’s goal, and he has paid it forward very well to his coach! Exceptional, appearing absolutely invincible, he made numerous saves and kept his team in the match.

Youcef Atal (6): He also had a lot to do with Sadio Mané in front of him but the right side of OGC Nice responded well. Offensively, he had fewer spaces but was able to show his speed on a few occasions.

Aïssa Mandi (7): He first made a few restart errors before showing himself to be imperial behind. It is also thanks to him that Algeria did not concede a goal this evening, as his feedback proved so valuable!

Bensebaïni frames (6,5): Placed back in the center of defense following his exceptional match against Uganda, the Borussia Dortmund player was clean and decisive. Definitely in this position?

Rayan Aït Nouri (7): If Bensebaïni found the axis, it is mainly to make room for this gentleman. Fast, technical, incisive, generally brilliant even if sometimes lacking on his side. We’ve seen worse summaries.

Ramiz Zerrouki (3,5): Again and again the same refrain for the Feyenoord player. It seems neither to evolve nor to convince the most skeptical about it. Damage!

Sofiane Feghouli (7,5): But how was Algeria able to do without him for so long? In cardio which seemed infinite, present in all parts of the field, the 2019 African champion proved invaluable. Already become indispensable again? Replaced by Adem Zorgane (84′), relatively little seen.

Fares Chaibi (7): It’s not his best appearance in the Algerian jersey, but for all that, the Frankfurt player was decisive. A header, when necessary, was enough to give Algeria a prestigious victory. Replaced by Hicham Boudaoui (90′), tucked in to lock.

Riyad Mahrez (6): He is not at his best in the game, too often showing himself to be discreet or strangely slow. However, what makes the Greens captain strong is his incredible ability to be decisive. He takes the very long free kick which ends up on Chaïbi’s head.

Said Benrahma (6): This is still not his benchmark match in the selection but, nonetheless, the West Ham player was able to produce a fairly interesting performance against a high-level opponent. Fairly clean technically, useful in combinations, he knew how to show that he deserved to be there.

Baghdad Bounedjah (4): Reduced by an injury, Bounedjah was nevertheless able to weigh on the opposing defense with his athletic profile and his multiple calls. Despite everything, he is clumsy in front of the cages and too grumpy with the referee. Replaced by Mohamed Amoura (73′), who had almost nothing to eat.
