Alfredo Morelos: Striker joins Santos but says ‘this is not a final farewell’ to Rangers

Morelos is Rangers’ record goalscorer in European competitions with 29 from 63 games

Alfredo Morelos has signed for Brazilian club Santos three months after his Rangers exit while insisting “this is not a final farewell”.

The 27-year-old Colombia striker left Ibrox under freedom of contract at the end of last season.

He had been linked with several clubs on the European mainland but has returned to South America.

In an emotional social media post, he said: “I will always be ready to be there for my friends in Royal Blue.”

He added: “This is not a final farewell but a see you later filled with hope. See you in the future Rangers.”

Morelos moved to the Glasgow club from HJK Helsinki in the summer of 2017 and went on to score 124 goals in 269 appearances.

He was top scorer in four of his six seasons at Rangers, his 29 goals in Europe is a club record, and he laid on 58 assists.

Describing Rangers as “my dear soulful team”, he described it as “an unforgettable chapter in my life”, recalling the league title win and progress to the Europa League final particularly fondly.

“Every time I wore this jersey, I did it with pride and gratitude,” he stated. “During this time, I not only grew as a player but also as a person.

“Together we showed that we are a formidable club. Today, I close this chapter with gratitude in my heart and the certainty that I will always carry these colours with me wherever I go.”

Santos, managed by Uruguayan Diego Aguirre, have been champions of Brazil on eight occasions, their last success coming in 2004.

Pele’s former club won the Copa do Brasil in 2010.
