AA Gent Holds the Lead in Jupiler Pro League, but Trainer Hein Vanhaezebrouck remains Cautious

After more than a quarter of the regular season, AA Gent is in the lead of the Jupiler Pro League, 2 points ahead of Union. Yet the flag does not go out for trainer Hein Vanhaezebrouck, as appears from his press conference before the match against RWDM.

KAA Gent is still the only team in our highest division that has not lost. The fact that he had to ‘park the bus’ against Antwerp does not bother Hein Vanhaezebrouck.

“That was not new, as I have read here and there. I have played defensively more often at my previous clubs. If you are fighting against relegation, you should not have an open day.”

“That’s actually the easiest thing there is. It’s just discipline. If everyone does their job, then that approach is the easiest thing there is. But you have to be able to switch gears if you do score a goal.”

“I also thought that we didn’t bring the ball enough against Antwerp. As a result, there were no opportunities. If there had been, it would have been discussed differently than ‘parking the bus’.”

“We’re trying to survive”

But AA Gent still kept its head above water, so it is still comfortably in the lead. However, that doesn’t give Vanhaezebrouck any joy.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I am never euphoric, but never dramatic either. I am always boring! Call it realistic if necessary. People don’t like that.”

The Ghent coach laughs off the fact that his players would already mention the word title. “It’s ridiculous to talk about that now. We’ve only just started!”

For some players the quality simply needs to increase.

Vanhaezebrouck is also critical of his team: “We could have gone against STVV. It could have been 3-0, 4-0 here after half an hour. The same against Eupen and that was only last weekend.”

“We are now in first place there and are trying to survive. We are also trying to get through the next match without damage, both physically and in terms of points.”
“It’s okay for the time being, but will it last? The chance that this will blow up in our faces is not non-existent.”

According to Vanhaezebrouck, Ghent cannot bring the same quality to every match. “And for some players the quality simply needs to increase. In any case, it is not enough to now be able to say that we are ready to remain at the top.”
